The Dashboard
The Dashboard is your back-office home base — the screen with every management tool TORO has: items, inventory, purchasing, transactions, employees, customers, reports, modules, and setup. It got a complete redesign, and if you've used the old version you'll feel right at home but find everything faster. This walks you through the whole thing, slowly, so nothing is a mystery.
Where to find it: On a register set up as a Dashboard station, the Dashboard opens by itself when you start up. On a regular sales register, look for a "Dashboard" or "Management" button on the main screen and tap it. If you're not sure which button that is, that's fine — call us and we'll point you right to it.
The Big Picture
Before any details, here's the whole screen in four pieces. Get these four and the rest is easy:
- The list of tabs down the left side. These group every tool by area — Purchasing, Inventory, Items, and so on. There are twelve of them. Tap one and that area's tools appear in the middle.
- The tools in the middle. Each tool is a "card" — a rectangle with its name, a short line telling you what it does, and a colored outline that matches its tab.
- The bar across the top. Clock In/Out, Messages, Only Favorites, and the search tools... box on the right.
- The bar across the very bottom. TORO Portal, Marketplace and Release Notes on the left; Auto (your light/dark theme) and Lock on the right.
That's the entire screen. Everything that used to be hidden inside pop-up windows is now sitting right there as a card.
The Twelve Tabs Down the Left
The tabs match how you already think about your shop. Here's what's behind each one:
- New in TORO — the newest and most-used features, gathered in one easy spot.
- Purchasing — purchase orders, receiving, reorder alerts, vendors and reps.
- Wholesale — wholesale invoices, accounts, payments, and receiving.
- Inventory — counts, exports, locations, barcodes, transfers, damaged items.
- Items — your catalog, price checks, brands, pricing, tags, multi-packs, label printing.
- Transactions — daily totals, looking up a sale, drawer and shift reports, fixing duplicate charges.
- Reporting — every report TORO has (this one works a little differently — see below).
- Employees — staff, payroll, commissions, employee settings.
- Customers — accounts, loyalty, coupons, surveys, gift cards.
- Store — sales tax, safe and bank deposits, credit card info.
- Modules & Integrations — your add-ons: SMS, online store, backups, terminals, humidor tracking, and more.
- TORO Configuration — system settings, the internet check, themes, and the TORO Portal.
Each tab's tools are outlined in that tab's color, so before long you'll recognize an area by its color as much as its name.
The Fastest Way: Just Search
If you ever can't find something, don't hunt — type it. Tap the white search box at the top right (it says "search tools...") and start typing. The tools narrow down as you go.
You don't have to know what we named anything. Search reads each tool's name, its description, and a list of everyday phrases. So if you type "tax rate" it finds Sales Tax. Type "card reader" and it finds your terminal setup. "Slow sellers," "refund," "markup," "wifi" — they all lead somewhere. If the same tool shows up under more than one tab, search lists it just once so you don't see it twice.
When you're done searching, press the Esc key (top-left of your keyboard) to clear the box and go back to your tabs.
Marking Favorites (Your Personal Short List)
Every tool has a small star in its top-left corner — it's always there, you don't have to do anything to make it show up. Starring the tools you use most keeps them right at your fingertips.
To make something a favorite:
- Find the tool you want.
- Click the star in its top-left corner. It fills in gold — that's a favorite now.
That's it. Favorited tools automatically jump to the top of whatever tab they're on, so your go-to tools are always first. To un-favorite, click the gold star again.
To see only your favorites: click the "Only Favorites" button at the top, just to the left of the search box. Now the screen shows nothing but your starred tools. A small note appears at the bottom that reads "ONLY SHOWING FAVORITE TOOLS" so you always know what you're looking at. Click the button again to go back to everything.
One nice safety net: if you turn on "Only Favorites" and land on a tab where you haven't starred anything yet, TORO won't show you a blank screen — it shows all the tools and the note at the bottom reads "NO FAVORITES — SHOWING ALL TOOLS." Star a few and they'll start filtering.
Your favorites are saved to your login, so they're waiting for you every time you sit down, on any register.
Putting Tools in Your Own Order
You can arrange the tools in any tab however you like.
- Click "Edit Layout" at the top right of the tool area. (Don't worry — nothing changes just by clicking it. You can click Done to back out at any time.)
- Each tool now shows little arrows: left and right move it one spot, up and down move it a full row.
- Click an arrow to nudge a tool where you want it.
- When you're happy, click Done.
A couple of things make this feel natural and keep you from making a mess:
- Your favorites stay in their own group at the top. You rearrange favorites among themselves (their arrows are gold), and everything else rearranges below them (arrows are teal). The two never get mixed up.
- Arrows only appear when a move is actually possible. A tool that's already first won't show a left or up arrow, so you're never guessing.
Your order is saved to your login, per tab — so it stays exactly how you set it. (On the Reporting tab, each report group remembers its own order.)
Make Your Own Groups
Favorites are one short list. If you'd rather have several of your own lists — say one for opening the shop, one for your weekly paperwork, one for the handful of reports you actually run — you can build them yourself. They show up as your very own tabs, right below the built-in ones, in a section called MY GROUPS.
To create a group:
- Look at the bottom of the tabs on the left. There's a "New Group" row with a little plus sign — click it.
- A small window opens. Give your group a name — whatever makes sense to you ("Morning Routine," "Paperwork," anything at all).
- Pick a color: click "Choose…" and tap the shade you want. That's the color your group's tab will wear.
- Pick an icon from the row of little pictures — a person, a star, a folder, and so on.
- Click "Save Group."
Your new group appears on the left under MY GROUPS, wearing the color and icon you chose.
To put tools in it: find any tool, anywhere in the Dashboard, and click it with the right mouse button (the right-hand button on your mouse). A little menu pops up listing your groups — click "Add to [your group's name]" and the tool drops into that group. You can add the same tool to as many groups as you like, and it still stays in its normal tab too, so nothing gets moved out of place.
Then click your group's tab on the left to see everything you've gathered there.
A few handy things:
- Reordering works exactly like the other tabs. Click "Edit Layout," use the arrows to arrange your group, and click Done.
- To take a tool back out, right-click it and choose "Remove from this group."
- To rename, recolor, or delete a whole group, right-click the group's name on the left and choose "Edit Group…" or "Delete Group." Deleting a group only throws away the list — it never touches the actual tools, so there's nothing to be afraid of.
Like everything else here, your groups are saved to your login, so they're waiting for you on any register.
The Reporting Tab
Reporting has so many reports that they're split into groups, shown as a row of buttons across the top of the report area: Advanced Reporting, Customer, Employee, Items, Companies, Sales, and Store. Click a group's button and you'll see just those reports.
The first button, Advanced Reporting, is a shortcut — click it and the full Advanced Reporting Module opens right up. The other group buttons are colored to match their area elsewhere in TORO (Customer reports share the Customers color, Employee reports the Employees color, and so on) so the whole screen stays consistent.
TORO Remembers How You Like It
You don't have to set things up every time. Two things follow you from one day to the next, tied to your login:
- The last tab you were on — reopen the Dashboard and you land right back there.
- Your "Only Favorites" setting — if you left it on, it's still on.
So once you've starred your favorites and arranged your tools, the Dashboard just keeps it that way for you. You can't break anything by setting it up.
Light or Dark
The Dashboard follows your TORO color theme. In Light mode the sidebar text is dark and easy to read; in Dark mode it adjusts back. You choose the theme from the TORO Configuration tab → the "TORO Theme Settings" card (more in Dark Mode and Themes).
Getting Back to the Register
When you're finished, just close the Dashboard window (the X in the top corner) and you're back where you started — ready to ring up your next customer.
For Longtime Users: Where Did Everything Go?
(Skip this part if TORO is new to you.) Nothing was removed — it was reorganized. If a tool used to be a button on the old screen, it's now a card under the matching tab:
- The old buttons that opened a window full of more buttons (Items, Inventory, Customers, and the like) are now tabs, and those inner buttons are the cards inside them.
- The green "New Features" box is now the New in TORO tab.
- The loose module buttons (SMS, online store, backups, terminal) live under the Modules & Integrations tab.
- Clock In/Out and Messages are always at the top of the screen, next to the search box.
- TORO Portal, Marketplace, Release Notes and Lock are always along the bottom.
- Store Notes and File Management are now cards on the Store tab.
And if you ever can't find something, just search for it — that's almost always the quickest path.
